Home Office Organisation Ideas for Hybrid Working Mums

No one wants their home to feel like an office. But with hybrid and remote work now the norm, most of us are living a hybrid lifestyle whether we chose to or not. The lines between work and home life blur fast, and switching off at the end of the day becomes harder than it should be.

This is exactly what we prioritise solving in our home office decluttering and organisation services. The goal is simple: make work time as productive as possible, and home life as calm, stress-free and abundant as possible.

If you're struggling to create that divide but aren't sure where to start, here are five simple, practical guidelines to help you separate work from home - even when they exist under the same roof.

1. Declutter First

Before you can organise a home office, you need to declutter it. Keep only what you genuinely need for work, and dedicate a specific space (or spaces) in your home to it. One that's easy to set up and just as easy to pack away. A decluttered workspace is the foundation of any home office organisation system, and it makes every other step on this list easier.

2. Invest in Smart Storage Solutions

Drawers, boxes, cupboards, and other storage solutions are essential if you're working in an open-plan space. The aim is simple: when work is packed away, your home shouldn't look (or feel) like an office anymore. Good storage means your living space can shift seamlessly between "office" and "home" without a trace of clutter left behind.

3. Create Dedicated Work and Home Items

Have a work mug. Have work stationery. Keep certain items exclusively for work hours, and resist the urge to use them during your downtime. This might sound small, but it plays a big role in the mental side of working from home - when you associate specific items with "work mode," using them outside of work hours starts to blur the boundary you're trying to build.

4. Build a Calming, Focused Workspace

Candles, a speaker for music, a kettle, your favourite coffee - small additions that keep you in the zone within your office space. The idea is to minimise the urge to constantly leave for the kitchen or wander between tasks. A calming environment helps you stay focused, present, and far less likely to feel like you're juggling work and home life simultaneously.

5. Always Close the Door

Simple, but remarkably effective. If your home office is in a separate room, always close the door - and keep it closed once work is done. The moment you walk through that door, you cross an invisible line between work mode and home mode, and your mindset will follow. When the day ends, or the weekend arrives, the door stays shut.

Ready for a Clearer Divide Between Work and Home?

We help people create this exact separation every day - decluttering, organising and streamlining home offices to support a healthier, more productive work-life balance. See how we can help you create a home office that works for you, not against you.

Decluttering Sentimental Items Without the Guilt

We've all felt that overwhelming urge to throw everything out and finally do a proper deep declutter. But when it comes to actually following through, there's usually a barrier standing in the way. One of the most common is the guilt that comes with letting go of sentimental items.

Often, you've forgotten these items even existed. But the moment it's time to get rid of them for good, it suddenly feels too emotional, too hard, and you can't imagine living without them.

The first thing to know: this is completely normal. Sentimental items carry real meaning, and that should be respected throughout the decluttering process. But for decluttering to actually work, the end goal being a home filled only with things that add genuine value to your life, needs to stay the guiding light.

Here are our top tips for decluttering, organising and streamlining your space while still honouring the emotional connection to sentimental items.

1. The Six-Month Rule

For the items you're most hesitant to part with, soften the decision by giving yourself a buffer. Pop them in a tub, and if you haven't reached for any of them within six months, it's time for them to go. Chances are, you don't really need them - and the sentimental value isn't strong enough to justify the extra clutter they're creating in your home.

2. Check for Double-Ups

Do you already own this item, or something similar that does the job better? Is there someone in your life who'd get more use or value out of it? If so, consider gifting it on rather than letting it sit unused.

3. Weigh Up the Value

Ask yourself: does this item add value to my life, give me back time, or take stress off my plate? If it can't tick at least one of these boxes, it's a sign you don't need to hold onto it.

4. Get Help When You Need It

Sometimes all it takes is having someone with no emotional attachment to the items - someone who can offer honest, unbiased advice. This is exactly where we come in. We help you get the most out of the process, making sure it's thorough and that the systems we set up mean you won't need us back.

One Extra Tip

Ask yourself these same questions before you buy your next item - that's where the real, lasting change begins. A decluttered, organised home does wonders for your sense of peace and calm. Trust us.

How To Survive A Sydney Apartment Move Without Losing Your Mind

Unfortunately, moving home is something most of us will have to endure at some stage in our lives. If only you could pick up your old home and just sync it to the new one, with all the same systems, organisation and function….. Well, actually you can - because we can.

Moving home doesn’t have to be something you ‘endure,’ it can be an exciting and refreshing new chapter and we know exactly how to make it the latter, without the stress.

Picture this: You need to pack up your current apartment and move into your new one within the next two weeks. Your mind is a merry go round of thoughts, people to contact, things to do, new items to buy, old ones to re home… The list goes on and on and it feels like there’s no reprieve. You’re bound to forget something and the weeks which follow being in your new space just feel like you’re recuperating instead of moving ahead.

There’s cleaners to book, removalists to organise, clothing to pack, breakables to wrap and a duality of needing some items in your current place and some in your new one throughout the back and forth stages.

Your health and social life has gone out the window, the whole family is stressed and you can’t help but think “why on earth did I decide to do this!?”

If you don’t do it, it doesn’t get done and the list of responsibilities keeps piling higher and higher…

Does this sound familiar?

Okay now, picture this:

You’re moving home in 2 weeks and you’re not stressed at all, you feel organised, on top of everything, excited, relaxed and ready for a new adventure.

Removalist truck? Organised. Cleaners? Booked in. Boxes? On their way… and you didn’t have to plan any of it - we did, because that’s what we do.

There’s time for your friends, family, rest, work and all the things which help you stay sane.

You have a concern, or a worry? You call us, we take it away. We brain storm, strategise and organise the whole thing.

It comes to moving day, you say goodbye to your old home and hello to your new one. You open the door and it’s perfectly set up, you know where everything is, there’s order in every corner. Dinner is ready, beds are made, the bath is running…

Guess what? You don’t have to imagine it. This is what we do, and we are dedicated to making your move a stress free one.

The Two Minute Rule For Optimum Organisation

To-do list constantly getting longer? Your days feel like you can never fit everything in? The constant need of small, quick fixes in the home, life admin, catch ups & then still finding time for rest and fun just making you feel like life is a hamster wheel?

Unfortunately - this feeling can be quite common, and as a team of mainly Mums, we really understand.

Luckily, there are some tried and tested ways to keep your to-do list manageable, home decluttered and life organised

Here are some of our top tips:

  1. The two minute rule - if the task on your list will take 2 minutes or less, do it now! Honestly this is a game changer and something that significantly helps you feel more productive and organised in daily life. Often many of the tasks we have written down can take 2 minutes or less, so ticking them off will rapidly clear your mind and help you focus on those longer, more tedious tasks.

  1. Map out your week like you do your work day. Haven’t been able to go to the gym all month because you keep running out of time? Have an overdue catch up that just keeps being postponed? Need to clean the bathroom before your in-laws come to stay but you’re far too tired by the weekend? Put it all in the calendar. Space out your day and time block: this is so important, because what you will realise is that the amount of things you put on your to-do list for the day often are impossible to get done in just 24 hours. Each time you write this list without time blocking realistic durations to complete them, you’re setting yourself up for failure and will forever feel like you’re treading water.

  1. Add frequent ‘to-do’ thoughts to your notes app during the day and a note book during the night - then reassess with a clear, energised mind. What you’ll find is that at least 50% of what you thought in the moment had to get done and was urgent, isn't a priority. This way you can make sure the important tasks are never compromised whilst ensuring that you prioritise other things like family time, health and rest over tasks that won’t add increase to your week or can wait for another time.

  1. Systems. We say this one a lot. But it will make such a big difference to your life and availability to always feel in control and organised, with a decluttered and peaceful space. Everything has a place, you purchase refills before they run out, delegate where you can & make sure there’s always 15-20minutes aside each day to maintain a clean home. This will help take the overwhelm and burden of mass re organisation and cleaning episodes every couple of weeks.

Tried and tested - stick by these and let us know if they make a difference to your life!

And remember, we can help you get started with a decluttered space, schedule and new mindset that will continue to bring a peaceful yet productive week your way.

5 Key Reasons Moving is Stressful

Moving home is said to be one of life’s most stressful events! This is why our team of professional organisers are here, to take the stress away and help you move into a new home with streamlined, decluttered and organised systems right from the get go.

Being a first time Mum - Taking the overwhelm away!

Being a first time Mum is really hard, for many reasons, but one of them is the constant targeting online for all these bells and whistles which promise they’ll make you a better Mum or your Baby will behave better…

The truth? It’s actually just luck of the draw!

Our director, has outlined 4 things which have helped her feel in control and calmer moving into Motherhood and might help you too:

  1. The more organised you are the easier it’ll be, but you don’t want to be in a position where you’re constantly carrying around mountains of stuff. Think about what sort of areas you’re going to consistently and how this could work best for you - without the overwhelm of 1 thousand nick knacks.

  1. A nappy caddy - you are changing baby’s nappy all the time! You need something with the essentials in there for easy access throughout the day and night. Make it bespoke to you and avoid things running out, when it’s less than 2/4 full - put a new one on the shopping list!

  1. Tubs, tubs, tubs!! Tubs which are labelled will be a saviour. Not only for keeping the home decluttered but also storing clothes for the next baby, a different season and so on.

  1. A pram grab bag with some essentials in there to avoid lugging your big bag everywhere. Having something you can keep in the pram daily will be super helpful.

  1. Lastly a baby specific laundry hamper - the washing loads go up so much. Doing tiny half hour washes from a separate washer is very useful and helps to keep your clothes nice and fresh from baby’s!

We love helping you prepare for baby, whether it’s setting up your nursery, organising the hand me downs or advising you on the best ways to stay organised during this time - let us take your stress away: emma@mums-pa.com.au

2026 - The Year of Decluttering and Organisation!

We know setting new year resolutions can be overwhelming and understanding what are actionable goals amidst a busy schedule can prevent you from ever getting started!

When it comes to decluttering and organisation - this often feels like an insurmountable mountain to climb, but the truth is - it doesn’t have to be.

Like anything else, if you set clear intentions and realistic goals - there’s no limit to what you can achieve.

Our director recently shared some amazing top tips for starting 2026 on the right foot, and we thought who better to share them with than you!

1) Think about how you want your space to ‘feel.’ Do you want it to feel like there’s less clutter there? Do you want to set up a play space in your living room? Whatever it is, use that intention as your guiding principle for the process. Remembering the end goal will help you stay motivated and on track.

2) Break it down into small steps - start with one room, one draw and then move on! Don’t overwhelm yourself with the thought of the whole job, this leads to procrastination and anxiety about the task ahead… When in reality, it should be a very therapeutic process!

3) Start with spaces which are easier - figure out what you want to feel in this space and make the beginning as easy as possible. Everything will roll on effortlessly from here!

4) Have three categories only: Keep, donate & throw. Very important - make sure you take your donate and throw categories away that day otherwise they will find their way back into your home because it’s easier otherwise!

5) No ‘maybe’ piles! This makes things too complicated. Stick to keep, donate & throw always.

And there you have it! If you stick to these simple, easy to action tips - your home will be organised, decluttered and stress free in no time.

But - don’t forget, if you’re needing a head start and the thought of implementing this is too much with your schedule, email Emma today and see how we can take this off your to do list! emma@mums-pa.com.au

How to Stay Organised Having a Pet!

At Mum’s PA we LOVE our fury friends - and of course being professional organisation and decutterers, we like to make sure there’s an easy to maintain and follow strategy for them, just like anyone else in the home.

Our director Emma has given us a great run down on the best way to stay on top of your pet’s every day routine:

“It’s not about buying all the fancy bells and whistles you get targeted on Instagram with! It’s about having a simple and consistent routine in your and your pet’s life.”

1) Have an organised pet zone, an area in the home where anything pet related is kept - toys, food, poo bags etc. This is so that everyone in the family knows where to locate these items and you avoid over buying things you already have.

2) Again, routine and consistency. Trial having the same day and time each week that you go for walks, feed them, groom them etc. This allows accountability for you and allows your pet to have an understanding on what to expect - much like you would for a toddler!

3) Create a file for all your pet’s paper work! There’s various different forms you need to keep organised and maintained, having everything in one place will save a lot of headaches when times come around that you need to access these quickly.

4) Groom your pet weekly, including their ears, paws, eyes, teeth etc to avoid build ups of gunk and high grooming / vet bills later on!

It may seem like a lot, but once you chunk it down there are all super actionable things you can implement to keep your pets happy, healthy & organised!

Why Moving Home Doesn’t Have To Be Stressful

Moving home doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Mum’s PA offers personalised support from planning to packing, decluttering, and unpacking-helping you enjoy a smooth, organised, and stress-free moving experience.

Why we hate piles & how to live without them!

We think it’s safe to say, many of us end up with miscellaneous ‘piles’ all around the house, which never seem to go away, and always have new items being added to which don’t go together.

At Mum’s PA, we are anti piles, and this is why:

  1. Having a cluttered home and un categorised piles, can actually add to your mental load & make you feel more stressed

  2. You end up losing things so easily!

  3. It slowly creeps into all rooms of the house, then your car, your desk your bags etc - before you know it, every area of your life is cluttered!

  4. You end up over buying the same products, because you think you don’t have them any more / they’ve run out… when in reality, they’re just hidden under piles of uncategorised things!

  5. This one is a bit more vain, but they look terrible. Small piles of items which don’t go together can make the whole room look like a shamble… and nobody wants that.

So, how do we keep our homes and other’s decluttered, organised and pile free? We’re going to break it down for you:

  1. It’s going to take more work, before it’s less work. This is in setting up systems - what we recommend is looking through these piles & seeing what items there are already areas in your home for

  2. Then, get yourself the needed storage compartments to house items in which don’t currently have a home

  3. Often you get overwhelmed by looking at these piles, our rule is to only touch things once. Go to the pile, look at it - say there’s 4 kid’s toys in there, pick them up once and take them straight to the toy box

  4. Another idea is to get yourself a basket, collect everything in there & and on a weekly basis you can then put all of that stuff away

  5. Avoid picking things up and placing them down again but somewhere else, perpetuating the problem

  6. Remember, techniques for this are dependent on the person & their lifestyle, so the best thing to do is hire some help to get started, develop what makes sense for you and then maintain it going forwards

Now the most important question remains, how do you stick to it?

Make sure everything has a home, and be super strict on putting things back where they came from. We also find that a 15 minute start of and end of day tidy does wonders when it comes to keeping your home organised & clutter free.

Need help getting started or don’t know which storage solutions are right for you?
